#64 Painted, Malifaux, The M&SU, Ramos, Brass Arachnid

Malifaux, The M&SU, Ramos, Brass Arachnid

Introduction

I really wanted this guy to look good, maybe its because the model was so annoying to get put together or perhaps its because it didn't fit on its base but I didn't want this model to ruin this box. I gave this guy all my effort to produce something good.

Painting

Step By Step

Brass Spider

  1. Prime Models: Black (Vallejo, Surface Primer Black)
  2. Rough all over dry brush: Silver (Army Painter, Gun Metal)
  3. Edge dry brush: Bronze (Citadel, Balthasar Gold)
  4. Top dry brush: Gold (Army Painter, Greedy Gold)
  5. Smoke: Grey (Vallejo Game Color, Sombre Grey)
  6. Ink: Brown (Army Painter Ink, Soft Tone)
  7. Smoke Highlight: Cream (P3 Menoth White Base)

 Bases

  1. Prime Models: Black (Vallejo, Surface Primer Black)
  2. Rough dry brush of the dirt: Brown (Reaper, Ashen Brown)
  3. Rough dry brush of the dirt: Brown (Reaper, Golden Brown)
  4. Rough dry brush of the Rock/Wood: Grey (Vallejo Game Colour, Sombre Grey)
  5. Rough dry brush of the Rock/Wood: Grey (Reaper, Concrete Grey)
  6. Edged: Black (Army Painter, Matt Black)

Basing

I really struggled to setup a base for this guy initially I tried having straws layered out in a fan supporting his legs but that just made the base huge. I then decided to go vertical and had a really nice bit of tanbark from the park which would look like an obelisk of rock. I trimmed off the base to make a square side and embedded it in the wall filler. I think is about the only way to go in the long run with this model looking at other peoples progress with the spider they all either have it perched on something or they have it on a wall like mine.

Conclusion

While I'm not sold on the layout of the miniature I do think it looks creepy. I've freaked out two people with it, only then realising someones reaction might be to bash it.

If I could say one this about this guy is he is Much Much creepier when its painted than when its in its grey base plastic.

#63 Painted, Malifaux, The M&SU, Ramos, The Arachnids

Malifaux, The M&SU, Ramos, The Arachnids

Introduction

Well I had an idea of what I wanted and it was a gold silver mix, I had searched up some pictures of brass to get an idea for the brass arachnid and figured they could share the scheme. I also wanted the models to look a little grimy, they would be scuttling around on the ground and would natural get dirty they would also be oily.

Painting

Step By Step

Models

  1. Prime Models: Black (Vallejo, Surface Primer Black)
  2. Rough all over dry brush: Silver (Army Painter, Gun Metal)
  3. Edge dry brush: Bronze (Citadel, Balthasar Gold)
  4. Top dry brush: Gold (Army Painter, Greedy Gold)
  5. Ink: Brown (Army Painter Ink, Soft Tone)
  6. Eye: Red (Reaper, Brilliant Red)
  7. Eyelets: Blue (Vallejo, Electric Blue)

 Bases

  1. Prime Models: Black (Vallejo, Surface Primer Black)
  2. Rough dry brush of the dirt: Brown (Reaper, Ashen Brown)
  3. Rough dry brush of the dirt: Brown (Reaper, Golden Brown)
  4. (Only one base) Pipe: Silver (Army Painter, Gun Metal)
  5. (Only one base) Pipe Ink: Brown (Army Painter Ink, Soft Tone)
  6. Rough dry brush of the Rock/Wood: Grey (Vallejo Game Colour, Sombre Grey)
  7. Rough dry brush of the Rock/Wood: Grey (Reaper, Concrete Grey)
  8. Edged: Black (Army Painter, Matt Black)

Basing

The bases needed some fiddling because 3 of those spiders had a hard time fitting onto one medium base. The others were going to be fine on their own single bases. I decided to add a little height to the medium base and get around the spacing issues that way.

I ended up using a bit of a plastic straw for a pipe on one model, rocks and tanbark on the others, all embedded in wall filler. The bit and pieces were picked up on a walk to the local park, I dried the wood in the oven before using to prevent any water from becoming a breeding ground for mould.

Conclusion

I feel like I really hit the mark with these guys. They were what I was aiming for and the bases worked out better than I thought they would.

#62 Assembly, Malifaux, The M&SU, Ramos

Malifaux, The M&SU, Ramos

Introduction

Well this looks complicated, add in a broken arm on mr Langston and you have a bit of a mess. I know I write this part after I have already assembled the models but its nice to pretend Im psychic.

This is the first set I badly wanted, I stayed away due largely because I was told it needed additional models for normal play, but guess I'm not paying attention to that anymore.

Assembly Instructions

Assembly

Assembly

  • Ramos, In this box he was the only guy who wasnt really fiddly to assemble the spider in his had is the only real gotcha which I would glue first, as otherwise you have to press it in while the small arm joint is being glued to the body (or you wait, but that isn't happening). Otherwise a fairly normal model.

  • Joss, This guy was normall until the moment I tried to glue all the cables, they were really fiddly and had some real trouble getting them nice. I tried tweezers and it wasn't much better.

  • Howard Langston, Good old Howard, had a broken arm to start with and went down from there, I had a trouble with both the legs and the mechanical arms on this guy in both cases I followed the instruction and failed to get the correct result, after getting annoyed I just did whatever I wanted and drilled out the holes that didn't fit neatly. The legs looked like they had specific holes to go into but sat proud and didn't seem to be correct. The arms weren't as bad but drilling out with an oversized drill bit was definitely the way to go.

  • Arachnids, Looking at the bodies there were different holes in them to accept specific arms, sadly either I'm just too good at pushing a square peg into a circle hole that I ended up with some arms that wouldn't go in, Mr. Drill Bit Was there to the rescue again.

  • Brass Arachnid, This guy didnt turn out like the box at all and YES I did follow the instructions, I have the video to prove it, In the end instead of me trying to get the arms looking like the box I fitted them into the shape of typical normal spider and really was happy with that. I realised that the base was way too small for the thing so something will have to be worked out there.

Conclusion

Well this was definitely a box I will remember the sheer number of bits and bops I had to fiddle with was unbelievable. Hopefully I don't break anything in the painting process.

#61 Assembly, Malifaux, Hide and Seek, The Dreamer

Malifaux, Hide and Seek, The Dreamer

Introduction

Putting these guys together looked fairly straight forward, the hard part was going to be the high part count models and particularly Lord Chompy Bits.

Assembly Instructions

Assembly

Models

  • Daydreams, Overall these guys weren't that bad the one with more parts was always going to be bad and it was not great.  The hands being seperate peices werent completely terrible but I did loose them on the carpet at least a couple of times, the wings also felt a little loose and needed to be moved around a little.

  • Alps, There wasnt anything complicated with the parts for theses guys, it wasnt entirely clear what bits all went together from the spue, but after a little dry fitting and testing I was able to get a bunch of working sets.

  • Copplius, was an easier model but I think I did something a little wrong with the legs and body on this guy, there he had a nasty gap and I needed to pull the legs loose and clean the join and reglue before it looked a lot neater.

  • The Dreamer, Most of the model was fine all except for Chompys Leg, which was small and fiddily I dropped it, I glued it to myself and generally hated it.

  • Lord Chompy Bits, This guy was a really nice model to put together, he did get a little gap heavy I'm not 100% sure why, I think I may have been a little hasty or perhaps the joins on the legs are long along the leg and it shows up more.

Conclusion

These came out looking really good. I cant wait to see them painted.
