Painted: Super Dungeon Explore, Flame
Introduction
A good friend and fellow plastic collector passed along Super Dungeon Explore to myself, with the intention of letting myself and my daughter paint some as she was quite enamored with the chibi style. It had been assembled and cleaned.I figured she would paint the heroes and I would take the enemies.
She has at the time of posting half painted the pink princess model and when finished will post her work in the Heroes collection.
Initially the models didn't rock my world, I liked the style but my friend had mentioned the details were thin and would be hard to make them really awesome.
I spent the better part of a day looking through and sifting the models, sorting them into sets, I then used some wall filler (Selleys No More Cracks Multipurpose Filler) to clean up the slots in the bases which were a lot larger than expected.
I then base coated them with a white primer (Rust-Oleum White Primer), I didn't really want to use my Vallejo primer as it would have cost a whole bottle and overall these were more of a side project.
White Primer was chosen because I wanted the colours to be brighter. I didn't bother to pre-shade, or really do anything complicated.
Painting
Fire Gel
I was very hesitant to start as always, in the end you pick one and go, I am glad I started with the fire gel they were small and very quick to get up and test what I wanted to achieve.Fire Gel (I only worked out the names of each of the models half way through painting), small little guys I figured I'd use the same technique as I have in the past for flame (see, Malifaux, Criid Crew), but instead of hot to cold flame i.e. Red to yellow, I went the reverse yellow to red. I don't really have a good reason I liked the red more as a highlight and the yellow gave me a nice pallet for the other colours to stand out from.
The only major screw up was me trying to paint black around the mouths to highlight, cant do that to save myself. Ended up switching the a ink/wash.
Step By Step:
- Airbrush Entire model yellow (Minitaire, Irradiated Yellow).
- Airbrush Flames on top of head red (Minitaire, Angelic Blood), this also gave an orange fade.
- Brushed, orange (Reaper, Fireball Orange) onto the eyes.
- (Screw-up) Attempted to paint black (Army Painter, Matt Black) around mouths/eyes, ended up painting back over with the orange and a different yellow (Reaper, Pale Saffron, the Minitaire yellow sucks for brushing over anything).
- Used a light brown (Army Painter Ink, Soft Tone) in just the cracks of the mouth, eyes and some of the flame to make them stand out stronger.
- Paint base black (Army Painter, Matt Black)
- Dry brush base with white (P3, Menoth White Highlight)
Burning Gel
Done at about the same time as the Fire Gel, I used the same pattern except I wanted the mouths to look different and stand out. Being largely flat on the body there was nothing to ink and stand out so I decided to use the red and give the mouth a outline. This was horrible in the first model I tried and painted some yellow over to lighten it, the other models I airbrushed a lot lighter and was happier with the effect.
I also inked heavier than the Fire Gel, setting a trend for all further models.
Ember Hound
Initially I thought they were part of a different set, so I was going to paint them purple, after digging into the cards I finally realised they were part of the flame guys.
I used the same pattern as the Gels, the only thing i found difficult is the mouths they didn't get enough primer or under the body of the wolf, I ended up respraying the models to get more white as the red base plastic colour hated the yellow I was using.
Lava Whirl
Looking at the card they seemed to have a red/orange crystal, I really didn't like that so i chose a blue color scheme which made it a different look to the others.
The flames were done the same as previous models but the crystal was done differently.
Step by Step:
- Airbrush the crystal blue (Minitaire, Lagoon Blue).
- Airbrush highlights on the crystal in purple (Minitaire, Ecchymose).
- Highlight the edges of the crystal with white.
- Ink the entire crystal with blue (Army Painter Ink, Blue)
Rock Gut
Like the Hounds I thought he was part of another set, I didn't twig his hair was fire.
The painting went slightly different.
Step by Step:
- Paint whole model yellow.
- Paint highlights to flame in red.
- Splash red around to create different red orange areas over the body.
- Using a very dark red (Reaper, Crimson Red), pick out the rocks on the body attempting to leave the yellow/orange/red between the rocks.
- Using a silver metallic (Army Painter, Gun Metal) paint the two bands on his leg and arm.
- Using a blue (Minitaire, Lagoon Blue) paint in the loin cloth.
- Ink the model in a similar fashion to the other models.
- Paint base black.
- Drybrush base lightly with white.
Blaze Beetle
The flames on the blaze beetle were done as other flames, while the body was painted in two solid colours manually, I really wish the model hadn't been assembled as getting at the under sections of the model was really painful and getting around the wings was also not great. Also the rocks are angled in a way in which its very hard to get at all the under hangs.
Roxor
I followed similar starting steps to Rock Gut but did the bands and runes on his body differently.
Step by Step:
- Paint whole model yellow.
- Paint highlights to flame in red.
- Splash red around to create different red orange areas over the body.
- Grab your drybrush and using black lightly highlight the runes broadly.
- To bring them out even more add more paint to the dry brush and heavily apply black to the runes.
- I used the dark red (Reaper, Crimson Red) on the stones around the base.
- Ink the model similar to the other models.
- Paint base black.
- Drybrush base lightly with white.
Final Word
I ended up liking the models, I still think the details needed to be deeper and cleaner, and some of the joins really should have been filled. I really wish the models weren't assembled when I got them.If I had to do it again, I'd change to a red to yellow colour scheme, I'd take a little more time with the bases.
I am truly over flame.
