#4 Painted: Malifaux, Starter Set

Malifaux, Starter Set

Introduction

Against normal expected practice I bought the starter set second. I am always a little scared when buying boxes with cut down rules, but hey it comes with two fate decks and two tape measures. I needed the decks, (cause I can only keep so much stuff in my head these days), they have the correct suites and the damage modifiers on them. YAY! Also tape measures are just fun to have more of, that's why I bought Dropzone commander (don't tell Hawk!).

Whats in the Box?

Well lets start with whats not in the box. The cut down rules, yes I know, "I should read stuff" but I'm lazy! The box comes with a pdf download, but you need to go off to the website and send them a photo of your receipt, guess what I didn't bother with? So who's out a rule book... Me! After chucking a temper tantrum, I REDACTED  and now have a pdf.

It comes with the two fate decks, with nice words on them for damage and the two VERY clicky tape measures. All the models were on normal sprues and there were no mystery baggies like Closing Time.

The models were very different to the Closing Time, very clean, also very simplified. Each faction on one large sprue.

Guild

Dr. Grimwell
This guy just looks crazy! The tool he's using isn't immediately clear as threatening, but the crazy grin and the large teeth really help him along. Very Patrick Bateman.

Nurse Heartsbane
Not really too much to say with this one, I don't like the model, it also was a pain with the book she's holding. I glued the bits together and then noticed it was offset and for the life of me I couldn't get them apart so I green stuffed and filed it.

2x Orderly's
One looks like an awesome heavy while the other looks like a cunning snake, both nice models.

Neverborn

Angel Eyes
Wasn't really feeling the model, the legs are odd you basically join them on the body at the crotch area. Not particularly hard, I just haven't really done that too often before. On a positive note, the arms are both attached to the gun which I always have an issue with when they aren't (Im looking at you infinity).

Scion of the Black Blood
Very odd pose, hes looks like he was run over by a bus. I guess it might work better if he's in a taunting pose, it just didn't work for me.

2x Bloodwretch's
I didn't really like either model they both seemed kinda half hearted, the models are unique but just compared to the other side, seemed to be phoning it in.

Assembly

These models were all relatively easy to put together. I kept the arms off Grimwell, Orderly 1, Angel Eyes (also her legs), and the two Wretches.

The wretches only needed a little fiddling with the arms to get them on and not hiding the body behind them, they basically have the arms pressed against their bodies but when glued in place you wouldnt be able to get to the cloths.

Angel Eyes's legs were going to hide that nice internal jacket that I wanted to be a bright area.

Grimwell and the Orderly again had their hands close to their body and made it hard to get at the cloths, so they remained unglued.

Painting

Both were primed gray (Vallejo, Gray Primer).

Basing

Guild

Similar to the Cobble stones I made for Closing Time, I used filler and then carved in some tiles painting them black and white. Red Ink for blood pools.

Neverborn

This was more of an experiment, filler to create a landscape added some rocks (kitty litter) and static grass. I drybrused the rocks with red and yellow hoping to create a soul stone look. I then did a drybrush in gray for the dirt.

Conclusion

I really liked the set, the cards are going to break eventually so I will need to replace with some plastic sets. I have now played the encounters with at least 3 people and always had a positive outcome.

Would recommend.
