#3 Painted: Malifaux, Crew Box, Closing Time - The Brewmaster

Malifaux, Crew Box, Closing Time - The Brewmaster

Introduction

My first time in the dark world of Malifaux was Closing Time, after watching a play through at House of war a local Friendly Local Game Store (FLGS). I decided to take the plunge, driven by my goal of painting less I chose, "Closing Time", thinking prime them black then paint them green. I got all creative and my love of Malifaux started.

Whats in the Box?

Seeing as this was my first box it was a strange introduction. Since this box I've found out most boxes come on solid sprue(s). This on the other hand was different everything, (sorta normal compared to deadzone), then I find a baggy with an arm in it and the mystery begins. After some tracking it was Moon Shinobi 3 but for a while I thought they'd handed me an extra for something else.

They come with the cards (stat and upgrade), the bases and a foam square which makes the stuff not rattle around as much I guess.

The Brewmaster

Cool model, wasn't sure if he was Goblin Gremlin or not, I ended up figuring he was.

Wesley

Took me a while to work out the things in his hands were the strings to the bags on his back.

Fingers

Good simple model, I like him. I did find it annoying lining up the right bag hand string with the bag, in the end I got as close as I could.

3x Moon Shinobi

I call these guys "bits" for short, I like the models, basing the upside down one is a little weird.

Assembly

Overall It was ok.

The Brewmaster and Wesley both had unattached feet. This would be great if you could do much with them sadly no, they only go one way. Since they have such a small contact point it was driving me nuts as I either didn't glue them on straight or I broke them off.

I still have no idea why the Moon shinobi were in so many bits but it felt a little nuts. As I said above one of the arms came in a different bag, still wondering how they did that.

Painting

Overall I was happy. I was very keen on the airbrush at that stage and left things unglued then airbrushed the hell outta them.

Paints:
  • Prime:  Grey (Vallejo, Grey Primer)
  • Skin: Green (Minitaire, Fresh Grass)
  • Brewmaster Cloths: Blue (Minitaire, Lagoon Blue) and Blue Ink (Army Painter Ink, Blue)
  • Others Cloths: Red (Minitaire, Angelic Blood) and Purple (Minitaire, Ecchymose)
  • Staffs backs and backpacks: Brown (Minitaire, Bark)
  • Staff/Bag Highlights, Wrist Bandages: White (Minitaire, Snow White)
  • Ink Everything: Black Ink (Army Painter Ink, Dark)

Basing

I went all crazy for the first time. I used filler to create the bases and then carved lines into it. Finally I sanded them back to flat, then painted them black, then dry brushed them grey.

Added some static grass to add a little something.

Conclusion

I didn't get the card with a link to Assembly Instructions, I found a blog (like this one) linking to it later. But that made some of the assembly a little complicated as an introduction to the Malifaux range.

The only bad thing was the feet. They really demanded pinning or something, as I'm really sure they are going to break at some point.

I would love it if Wyrd fixed the arm issue with the box, as it just adds to the confusion of the arm.

I would not recommend this box to anyone wanting to start playing BUT I would recommend others in the range.

I personally had a blast with these models.
