#9 Painted, Deadzone, Starter Set

Deadzone, Starter Set

Introduction

Another one of the non-40k toes I had in the water, reading up on the Manufacturer Mantic there was some controversy over the product these were made in Restic, these were my first exposure and to spoil the fun of reading the rest, I didnt have any issues with the material itself.

Whats in the Box?

A literal arse load of stuff, yes 1 cubic arse load.
  • Gaming Mat (Cloth top, rubber bottom)
  • A pile of hard plastic building bits
  • Dice/Accessories
  • A pile of baggies of units, cut up into tiny little bits.
  • Bases
What you don't get is any assembly instructions.

The miniatures:

Enforcers

1x Enforcer Peacekeeper Captain

4x Enforcers with Heavy Rifle

2x Assault Enforcers

1x Enforcer Engineer

1x Enforcer Sniper

1x Enforcer Missile Launcher

 2x Enforcer Sentry Guns

Plague

1x Plague Stage 1A

3x Plague Stage 2A

4x Plague Stage 3A

1x Plague Stage 3A with HMG

2x Plague Stage 3D “Hellhounds

Buildings:

I didn't bother to taken any photos of the scenery I put together as most died in the great attack of my son about 3 months ago and I haven't bother repairing any of it. It is Painted and my appear in other posts.

While I liked the idea, I hate the little clips. I would rather have had a clear plan from Mantic for deadzone but sadly they seemed to be spinning as being reassemble able which I wouldn't agree with at all, the clips and the ports they go into are a tight fit, a light coat of paint and they definitely wont go in.

In terms of buildings, I think you could really get 2-3 good building out of what was provided leaving you enough to make some barricades and other stuff.

Assembly

Assembly was easy all the way until I hit the Enforces troops it then begun a game of finding the appropriate arms for each guy, There were 30-40 bits in the bag and having to sort through the pile to find the ones that went together, was it the worst NO, was it ok NO.

I always hate the miniatures with the arms and guns unattached, this again was the case here. They did go together nicely but only after some fiddling.

On the subject of mold lines, I didn't have too many issues, scalpel and some time had it done.

On the other hand the bases were not my favorite they have a round socket in the base which accepts the round nugget on the feet, this did not fit as clean as I had hoped. It would be revealed with basic basing.

I would also like to bring up the plague guy on the wall, Its a stupid model in my opinion it get busted every time I touch it and I never seemed to be able to find a nice spot on the wall. I broke him taking photos so he has changed between photos.

The Scenery is good but those clips really don't work, I would just use them to glue the entire piece together. In the end a 1 year old killed mine, but it is all within the repairable range.

Painting

Alright so, I painted these guys a while ago, Not years but months. I really dislike what I did with the enforcers to the amount when I kickstarted WarPath (the larger edition of Deadzone) I made sure to rebuy a pile of Enforcers). The white dry brush was a step too far, I did it because the miniatures looked too dark.

I don't mind what I did with the Plague the Purple, green looks interesting.

Enforcers:
  1. Armour: Blue (Reaper, Navy Blue)
  2. Armour Highlights: Purple (Reaper, Gem Purple)
  3. Sniper Cape: Pale Green (Reaper, Stained Olive)
  4. Guns: Black (Army Painter, Matt Black)
  5. Armour Ink: Blue (Army Painter Ink, Blue)
  6. Armour Dry Brush: White (P3, Menoth White Highlight)
Plague
  1. Skin: Dark Red (Reaper, Crimson Red)
  2. Armour: Green (Reaper, Mossy Green)
  3. Skin Ink: Red (Army Painter Ink, Red)
  4. Armour Ink: Green (Army Painter Ink, Green)
  5. Armour Dry Brush: White (P3, Menoth White Highlight)
Buildings
  1. Spray Paint: Grey Primer
  2. Spray Paint underside: Black
  3. Paint Metal: Silver (Army Painter, Gun Metal)
  4. Paint Highlights: Yellow (Reaper, Pale Safron)
  5. Paint Lights: Blue (Reaper, Ice Blue)
  6. Ink Blood: Red (Army Painter, Red)
  7. Ink Rush/Dirt/Grime: Brown (Army Painter, Soft)

Basing

I wanted to make some concrete for the bases as the mat was lots of grey.

Mixed the following
  • Clean Sand
  • PVA
  • Kitty litter
  • Gray (Reaper, Military Gray).
Applied liberally to the bases. Once dry, dry brush the concrete with White (P3, Menoth White Highlight).

Conclusion

I really enoyed this set even if the results were not the best. This set resolved me not to return to 40k, which I was considering (I bought Dark Vengeance at the same time as this box).

Deadzone has some really nice sculpts and I think anyone with better painting skill than me could get a real kick out of it.

Would Recommend.
